Reproduction of Ryuichi Yamashiro’s “Forest” – 1954 on stained paper, with a backstory…
We’ve seen this poster when visiting the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 2019, where when we first caught sight we were sure this had to resemble some kind of forest and we were rather fascinated by the work.
I wanted to give a poster of this to my girlfriend for Christmas but none could be found anywhere, so I did the nerdy thing and wrote a Matlab script that recreates a vector image from my original photograph by optimizing the mapping, scaling, and rotation of the two symbols.
I gave an A3-sized version back then, and almost 3 years later we finally had the room to hang a full-sized version. The paper is stained using tea to give it the aged look.
